How Yoga Stretches Can Help You Relax and Strengthen Your Body

Advanced age can stiffen our limbs and make it difficult for us to move around especially during cold weather. If you are one of those people who frequently suffer from stiff and painful limbs during cold weather, do not hit the bed and curl up in misery.

Swallow a pill will relieve the pain for a while but eventually, when the power of the pill wears off, you begin to feel that niggling pain again. To help you relieve the stiffness and pain at in your limbs, muscles and joints, you should do yoga stretches regularly. Yoga stretches will help tone your muscles and keep your joints more supple.

Yoga is a very safe exercise. It is non-competitive and does not require you to test your strength and endurance abruptly. Note that yoga stretches are done slowly and gently, so even if you are already advanced in years and your bones and muscles are no longer as flexible as they used to be, you are not really in direct danger of hurting yourself when doing yoga stretches.

In fact, if you do yoga stretched regularly, you will be able to rebuild your lost muscles and feel stronger. A lot of elderly people who are into yoga, reported that they feel a renewed sense of vigor after doing yoga exercise for sometime.

Getting Started

Yoga stretches should be performed without causing any internal strains. To help you get started with your yoga exercise, you will need to work with a professional trainer or teacher. If you cannot afford to hire a personal trainer to work with you one on one, you can always enroll in a yoga class that is designed for people of advanced age or people with some medical problems.

Look for a good class schedule. If you feel quite stiff when you wake up in the morning, you should not force yourself to go to a yoga class early in the morning. A yoga class sometime during the middle of the day or late in the afternoon will be better for you. Once you find the right yoga class, you should talk to the instructor and tell him or her about your physical problems. Talking to the instructor is very important so that the instructor can design a modified routine that will suit your needs.

It will take time before you can regain some of your muscle and joint flexibility. Depending on your age and your lifestyle it may take a few weeks to loosen up those joints and muscles. However, the good news is that once you have considerably strengthened your joints and muscles, it will be easier for you to move around and do whatever you want to do.

Yoga Sandals: Inter-toe Massage for Better Health

Wearing yoga sandals has a lot of advantages. According to studies, inter-toe massage can have tremendous health benefits. Note that our toes are filled with capillaries that are connected to the different organs of our body.

Massaging and stimulating their capillaries through the use of yoga sandals will enhance the circulation of the blood towards the other parts of the body. Good blood circulation will make the different organs of the body function more efficiently.

Aside from having many capillaries that are connected to the different parts of the body, our feet also have 26 bones that are connected to tendons and ligaments. The delicate tendons and ligaments around our feet need to be massaged every now and then to promote foot health.

Unfortunately, since we almost always wear shoes, these tendons, bones and ligaments do not usually get the attention that they need. Knowing the importance of foot health, the makers of yoga sandals came up with some designs that will exercise and massage these bones, tendons and ligaments.

Concept of the Yoga Sandal

The concept of the therapeutic yoga sandal is more or less like that of pedicure slippers which prevent the toes from touching each other. Toe spreading has many medical advances. First, it strengthens the muscles between the toes and prevents them from weakening through disuse.

Second, it helps fix the problems of arthritic feet. Note that arthritis usually happens when the joins of the feet atrophies because of disuse. By spreading the toes and toning the muscles of the feet, feet arthritis can be prevented.

Third, spreading the toes with the use of yoga sandals can relieve aching and tired feet. If you are one of those people who are always on your feet more of the day, you can help your feet relax after a long day by wearing yoga sandals when you get home.

Wearing Yoga Sandals

Therapeutic yoga sandals can be quite uncomfortable to wear at first especially if you have been used to wearing shoes. Note that this type of sandals is designed to spread your toes apart and that can really be uncomfortable if you are not yet used to it.

To give yourself time to adjust to the yoga sandals, wear the sandals for just a few minutes at first. Once your get used to the sandals, you can already use it for an hour or more. However, try not to wear the sandals for several hours because the muscles in between your toes could actually suffer from the tension of being stretched for long period.

Things that You and Your Yoga Partner Should Know When Taking Yoga Classes

Obesity is one of the biggest problems among people in the United States nowadays. Poor diet and lack of exercise are two of the biggest reasons for obesity. Fortunately, we all can lose weight if we eat well and exercise much. Unfortunately, a lot of people start an exercise program like yoga only to give up after a few sessions thus, they never really lose their excess pounds.

If you are one of those people who are easily bored or discouraged, you will mostly like find some excuses not to attend your yoga classes after a couple of sessions. To help you overcome this kind of attitude, you will need a yoga partner who can help you stay in the right course.

Your yoga partner could be your spouse, your friend or a family member who is also enrolled in the same yoga class as you. Being in the same yoga class is very important to provide mutual understanding and support. Having someone to talk to is very important especially during those trying times when you feel you are not making progress and you are ready to give up.

Working Out with Your Yoga Partner

There are a few things that you need to remember when working out with your yoga partner. Before going to yoga class, you and your yoga partner should not eat a big meal. A big meal takes time to digest and feels heavy on the stomach. Instead of eating a big meal, you and your partner should settle for a light meal a few hours before your class starts.

Light meals should contain plenty of fruits and vegetables. If you and your partner lives apart and you do not meal your meals together, you should make it a point to remind each other not to each too much before class.

During your yoga class, you and your yoga partner should avoid drinking water. Yes, it is perfectly alright to drink water before and after your yoga classes but never during classes. Drinking water while doing yoga poses can give you an upset stomach. Also, never eat during classes.

If you or your partner has some eating problems and one or both of you always feel this urge to munch on something every now and then, make a pact with your yoga partner to check each other’s bags before entering the fitness center. Both of you must not bring food inside the fitness center. You can eat after your class but never during your class.
